North Haven, CT December 6, 2001:
The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce's IT Committee today announced the date for their Virus Protection Seminar.

If your computers were down for three or more days, what would this cost your business? Recently, the “NIMDA” computer virus disabled the PCs of hundreds of businesses-- at a cost estimated in the billions. Viruses have the potential to seriously disrupt your business, and at enormous cost.

The IT Committee of the Chamber is hosting a special seminar that presents what you need to know to understand and hopefully avoid computer viruses of all kinds. If you use email or Instant Messenger at work, you must attend this seminar to learn how to protect your business.

“What can it cost you? Plenty,” said Dan Mezick, Chair of the Chamber’s IT Committee. “Viruses have to be treated as an ongoing, dangerous threat to your business. Recent virus strains can send your personal information, such as online brokerage account numbers and passwords, to others as you use your computer.” He cautions members to avoid accessing any online money accounts from the same computer that receives your email. “Brokerage firms legally bind you to protect your account information,” Mezick continued. “If someone gains access, the risk lies entirely with you, not the brokerage firm. Viruses have enormous destructive potential.”

At a minimum, destructive viruses can cost your business dearly—with downtime. “Anyone who has experienced a severe virus attack knows the costs of downtime, which can easily exceed $1000 per computer per day. We want Chamber members to be prepared for viruses so these risks can be avoided entirely, by preventative action.”
